About India
Located in southern Asia, India is the most populous democracy in the world and has been a nexus for trade routes and cross-cultural exchanges for most of its history. It is the birthplace of four major world religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism), and has been shaped as by Christianity, Islam, and Judaism since the first millennium. It is this ability to keep its traditions while accepting new ideas, customs, foods, and even languages that makes India such a diverse society. While Hindi and English are the official languages of the country, there are more than 1,500 dialects. India gained its independence in 1947 through the widespread use of nonviolent resistance, and has made large economic strides in the last decade. Almost 70 percent of its residents still live in rural areas, though its cities are growing quickly.
Year Program
Come study for a year in India! Not only will you attend high school, but you’ll become part of a family. School is an important activity, and most students (even the best ones) will work with tutors after school to improve their learning. Most families have multiple generations living under one roof, so you’ll learn from not only kids your own age, but from the experiences of parents and grandparents as well. Family life is central in India and they share a lot of time together, especially at meals. The main staples of meals are rice and vegetables with meat as a side. Indians share everything with families or friends, including the food on their plates. The concept of yours and mine is not as pronounced as in the West. Young people have great respect for age and elders, and to show respect, they may often touch feet of the elders so as to seek their blessings.
